Digiscape Series
Digiscape started in 2021 with Lava. It wasn't planned as a series. I was just curious: what does a digital ecosystem look like if you're not trying to copy the real thing?


Then came Seabed, then Forest. At some point I noticed a pattern. I kept doing the same thing I did as a kid, flipping a plastic tub upside down and deciding it was a wok. Take something real, change one rule about it, see what happens.


What if you could walk through a forest that flipped upside down? What if you could hear what a plant feels when you touch it? What if an ocean made of leaves moved like real water?


Each work starts from a moment that caught me off guard, something I saw, touched, or learned for the first time. The formats keep changing. Screens, fulldome, living plants wired to sensors. But the impulse hasn't changed since I was a kid with a plastic tub.

Someone at an exhibition asked me, "Did you know plants can talk to each other?"


I laughed. It sounded ridiculous. Then I went home and looked it up, and it turns out the ridiculous thing is that it's true. Under every forest floor there's a network connecting plants and fungi, passing nutrients, warnings, maybe something like memory. Mycelia. It's been there for hundreds of millions of years, running quietly beneath every step we've ever taken on soil.


I couldn't stop thinking about it. Not the science. The feeling. That something this vast and this old has been right under our feet the whole time, and we just never learned to listen.


What if you could hear that conversation?


While I was researching, I found Playtronica's Biotron, a sensor that reads micro-fluctuations in electrical resistance when someone touches a living organism. It gives plants a signal that digital systems can interpret. I reached out, we connected, and the collaboration became the foundation of this piece.


The installation centers on a terrarium I had custom-made. Real moss, real soil, real plants. When you reach in, the smell hits you first. Grassy, earthy, the kind that sticks to your fingers. That part matters to me. Most interactive works start with a gesture or a screen. This one starts with you putting your hand into dirt.

Your touch generates bioelectric data. The Biotron reads it and feeds it into real-time generative visuals: digital flora grows, blooms, and shifts on the surrounding screens, as though the moss is relaying what it felt to a parallel world. The room smells like wet earth. The screen moves because something alive was touched.


I don't try to explain how mycelia work. The piece isn't educational. It's closer to an invitation: what would it feel like to join a conversation that started long before you showed up, and will keep going after you leave?

What does wind feel like?


I grew up at the foot of a mountain in Taiwan. The living room had a full wall of windows facing west. In summer we left them open. Around three or four in the afternoon, sunlight would slip through the trees outside and land on the floor tiles in patches. When the house was quiet, you'd see those patches rearrange themselves before you felt the wind. I never thought much of it. That was just how home looked.


After I moved to the US in 2024, I started spending a lot of time alone. Staring at things without really meaning to. One afternoon I noticed light on the floor, the same kind of pattern. I stood there for a while. It wasn't the same tree, but my body didn't seem to care.


What stayed with me wasn't the homesickness part. I keep wondering if everything wind touches responds in its own way. Different surfaces, different textures. Wind doesn't seem to have just one form, it kind of borrows the grain of whatever it passes through. 
I'm still thinking about it.


Each piece in this series starts from a different surface. The setup stays simple: a framed projection on the wall, always swaying just barely. The air in the room is enough to keep it gently moving. When you blow toward the sensor, the texture inside responds. Your breath sort of leaves something behind.


What does wind actually feel like? The grain of leaves drifting, like in Synchronic Tides? The fine wrinkle of a pond? I can't quite say.


Maybe every surface gives a little of it back.

I walked into the Hayden Planetarium in New York and sat through a screening of Encounters in the Milky Way. When it ended I just sat there for a while.


Before that, everything I'd made was a window. You look through a screen into somewhere else. The dome was different. There was no frame, no edge. You were inside it. The image wasn't in front of you. It was above, below, everywhere. Your body didn't know where to anchor itself, and that disorientation felt like the closest thing to dreaming while awake.


I wanted to make that feeling, but with my own world inside it.


Second Nature is a fulldome film that takes the Digiscape vocabulary — the landscapes, the particle systems, the light behaviors I've been building for years — and wraps it around you. Clouds pulse like bioluminescence. Trees shift between angular and organic shapes as though nature is editing its own geometry. Everything in the film comes from something real, but inside the dome, surrounded by Bo-Xun Lin's score, it becomes a place you've never been.


What if you could fall asleep and land inside a nature that runs on different rules? That's what I was going for. After three years of building digital landscapes on screens, Second Nature was the moment Digiscape escaped the rectangle.

An interactive installation where you control the wind with your hands.


🌈🪟Stained Glass🪟🌈


I walked into the Basílica de la Sagrada Família and got hit by light.


Not metaphorically. The sun came through the stained glass and the whole space turned into color. The air had color. I just stood there. I don't know how long. I remember thinking that I'd seen stained glass before, in photos, in other churches, but I'd never been inside it like this. The difference between looking at light and being swallowed by it is enormous.


When I collaborated with Hsieh Chen Lin (@damonxart), we reimagined stained glass in a new way. His gradient work turned it into something alive — an infinite, flowing pattern that feels like it has no end. Together, we found a way to bring this timeless medium into the digital realm.

🌪️🍃Whirling Leaves🍃🌪️


The other half of this piece comes from something much smaller. I've been watching leaves spin in the wind for as long as I can remember. My house in Taiwan is at the foot of a mountain, so there's always wind, always leaves. When I was a kid, I used to pretend I could control them with my hands. Invisible force fields, like a superpower nobody could see. I'd stand there genuinely concentrating, willing the leaves to change direction.


I still do it sometimes. Not the concentrating part. Just the watching. There's something about a leaf caught in a gust that makes me stop whatever I'm doing.


What if you actually could control the wind with your hands?


Synchronic Tides puts those two memories together. That became the visual language. The leaves became the interaction — your hand movements control how they fall, swirl, scatter. The two shouldn't work together, stained glass and falling leaves, but they do. Maybe because they came from the same place in me: moments where I was paying such close attention that everything else disappeared.


It's not a complicated piece. It's two things I can't stop thinking about, built into a space where you get to feel them at the same time. If that changes how you look at the next leaf that blows past your window, I've done my job.

This one came from a plant wall.


I walk past one almost every day. Living walls — moss, ferns, all that greenery stuck to the side of a building. I've always liked them. One day I just started wondering: what would that look like in a digital space? Not a copy. Not a simulation. Something with its own logic.


Botanical Eden is an installation where a real terrarium sits inside the space alongside digital flora growing on screens. The two exist together. You see actual moss and soil, and right next to it, generative plants that bloom and shift in real time.


Working with fiber artist V&#38;amp;J Studio, we created hand-made plants, physical, tactile objects that sit alongside the digital flora on screen. Installation artist Ta Chung Liu designed a mechanical system that lets the physical plants actually move when visitors interact with the digital imagery. Touch the screen, and the real plants respond.


What if a plant wall existed in two dimensions at once, physical and digital, side by side?


This was the first time I brought real, living material into a Digiscape work. Before this, everything was purely digital. But it turns out the digital doesn't feel as alive unless there's something actually alive next to it. The contrast makes both sides sharper.


The photos on this page was taken during the display of the artwork at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Group's 2023 Digital Art Exhibition 'Love is Love’.

The first time I saw bioluminescence with my own eyes, I couldn't believe it was real.


I knew it existed. I'd seen photos, watched videos. But standing there, watching the water light up — that gap between knowing something and actually seeing it was enormous. The glow only appeared when something disturbed the surface. Still water, nothing. A wave, and suddenly the whole coastline was electric blue.


Sea Sparkle is my attempt to recreate that gap. Not the bioluminescence itself, but the surprise of it. The installation is dark and quiet until you interact with it. Then light blooms across the surface, reactive, alive, unpredictable. When you stop, it fades back to stillness.


What if you could trigger bioluminescence with your own hands?


The sound in this piece is generated in real time through iPad control. No loops, no pre-recorded tracks. Every session sounds different because every interaction is different.

A generative ocean installation commissioned by Meet JP Dental Clinic, produced by Fugu Fish Creations.


The piece renders a digital ocean in real time: waves, tides, and currents generated through algorithms rather than pre-rendered animation. The motion is organic and unpredictable, closer to how water actually behaves than what you'd get from a looped video.


The installation was later selected for the 2023 Flare New Media Festival in Shanghai and exhibited at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi Place A9. A piece designed for a dental clinic ending up in an art festival is a trajectory I enjoy. It means the work holds up outside its original context.


My role: visual design and real-time generative system.

My family's house in Taiwan sits at the foot of a mountain. Growing up, I spent a lot of time staring at it. Morning to night, the same trees, the same rocks. But they never looked the same. The light shifted, the weather changed, and suddenly the whole mountain carried a different quality. Same place, different presence every time.


I've also always been obsessed with flipped worlds. Probably because Inception left a permanent mark on me. That feeling of a familiar space folding into something impossible.


Forest combines both. One side is familiar — trees swaying, light filtering through leaves, the kind of scene you might see on a hiking trail. Then it flips. The same forest turns upside down. The trees are still there, growing downward now, and particles scatter where the ground used to be. You're in the same place, but the rules changed.


What if a forest grew in both directions at once — and you were standing at the fold?


This was the piece where Digiscape stopped being a series of pretty landscapes and started becoming something people actually walked away thinking about. The shift from "that looks nice" to "wait, what just happened" is what I've been chasing ever since.
